What happens in a counselling session?
Everyone’s personal life experiences are different and how we perceive these experiences is something we would look at to gain on understanding of their world and themselves.
My approach is humanistic whereby I invite clients to explore their feelings, beliefs and thoughts in a non-judgemental way. Also, by understanding behaviour and being conscious of thought and life patterns can reveal the reasoning behind repeating negative behaviour or why we react in certain ways to a given situation.
Successful counselling is built on a mutually trusting and respectful relationship built between the client and counsellor, as this develops the client is increasingly confident to explore their thoughts, feelings and emotions in a confidential environment.
In the sessions we could also introduce areas around intervention and expression if it thought to be beneficial. I have successfully incorporated Babuska (Russian) Layering Dolls, memory jars and weaving (around bereavement), writing and diary work, creative visual aids, art and word association which help the client in discovery and reflection.
